Furthermore, while the girls are to be applauded for their collection of samples and analysis of the results, Mr. Wong should be credited as a full collaborator as he actually amplified the DNA present within samples to produce results that could then be correlated with existing bar codes within the Fish-BOL library. Graduate students are often overworked and underpaid when compared to their counterparts in private industry - so give the guy his due.

This time I get my passing mention in the New York Times. Front page apparently for Friday, August 22, 2008.

Here’s the electronic version. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/science/22fish.html?hp

EDIT: Not too sure what’s up with the link. Sometimes it asks me to login to access the article, and sometimes it doesn’t.

There’s some rumbling about the Globe and Mail too. Or at the very least UofG’s website… My prof did do an interview with CanWest though.

EDIT: Oh found the Globe and Mail article.  And I may have posted a comment about my own work… http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080821.wfish0821/BNStory/specialScienceandHealth/home

Kids are dumb. I watched these kids playing Rock Band at Futureshop the other day. For fuck’s sake! You hit the thing when the note lines up! Not all willy-nilly randomly. Stupid kids.

More seriously though. I Googled myself out of curiosity, just to see what would come up. I don’t mean my real name (because that just brings up a bunch of profs from various universities). I mean by adopted online tag, “runicism”. Sure enough, MOST of the results originate from something I’ve done. Perhaps a little unsettling even, as it brought up my Flickr account. Other hits are from some of YOUR blogs.  And still others look to be the result of data mining.  However, a bunch of the hits are from inexplicable role playing characters. I suppose they would be neat if I hadn’t grown tired of the whole Fantasy genre a long, long time ago. Nowadays, FF games are about the only fantasy I can bear, and even then, most of those have become steam-punk or sci-fi. But I digress.

Now, I understand it’s the internet, and everything is done to death on the internet, but it’s a little disappointing to find out your username isn’t unique. Especially considering the word’s made up. HOWEVER, there is good news for me. All these other “Runicisms” out there don’t follow the same style guide. They all capitalize their R, and that’s just plain wrong. I’m “runicism”, and as far as I can tell, it’s unique.

Stupid kids and their capitalization. Oh the irony in that statement.
